D2E Brief

Develop bespoke lift to accommodate unusual building requirements

The Outcomes

Bespoke Lift In order to accommodate very small headroom, conventional lift design could not be considered. The requirements of the lift for the building were for occasional use by a wheelchair user. The unique interior design of the residence meant that standard finishes would be inappropriate. Therefore, with careful research and detailed investigations, D2E International located a lift company that manufactured platform lifts with a cabin. Although not unique, what was special was the fact that the cabin could accommodate very specific design requirements including, special brass finishes, a chandelier and doors that were the same material as the room doors (throughout the building). A lift was therefore designed that not only accommodated severe existing building constraints but very demanding interior designs.

Existing Building Designs Retained The headroom requirements of a conventional lift would have resulted in the lift shaft puncturing the roof in a building located in a scenic part of London with strict planning constraints. Equally the foundations did not allow a pit that was deep enough to accommodate a conventional passenger lift. Given these constraints, this was why a platform lift with a cab was chosen. By choosing this option, the building design was not compromised by the passenger lift.

Flexible Design Process With demanding interior designs, many options were considered prior to a final choice being made. The choice of lift and lift company by D2E International for this project meant that the product and personnel involved had to have an outlook that reflected the demands of this client’s design development process.
